Saturdays March 11, 18 & 25 – St Peter’s School
These are the titles and descriptions of the masterclass content. Students choose ONE of these masterclasses to study across three sessions. Details of how to apply to our masterclasses this year are available from your child’s school ISSP contact.
Philosophy of Beauty
What is beauty? Is beauty objective or subjective? Can we talk about beauty in a meaningful way? In this masterclass we will explore and evaluate a variety of philosophical responses to these questions. We will also investigate how different periods of art history reflect philosophical views of beauty. Ultimately, we will be engaging in one of the most controversial and enduring debates in Western Philosophy.
From Shabby To Chic!
Find out where fabrics come from and how we can recycle unwanted products that can often be past their beautiful best. We will then use a range of unwanted items and fabrics to produce a wearable or useable product that impacts on the environment in a positive way. This could be a simple garment, soft furnishing or piece of fabric art. Come along and create your own piece of chic from shabby!
Beauty in Dark Places
Why in troubled times do people yearn for beauty? This masterclass will consider beauty in dark places and explore what the past can teach us about remembrance, survival and humanity. History is full of dark moments, where hope appears to have expired amongst the savagery of life. Yet, in an almost paradoxical way, these moments reveal instances of incredible beauty. Friendship in the gulag, memorials on the battlefield, poetry in The Tower, lipstick in concentration camps – all show how people have faced down horror with beauty. This masterclass will consider beauty in the darkest of places and explore what the past can teach us about remembrance, survival and humanity.
Beautiful Equations through Art
Mathematicians will tell you that there are some equations that are ‘just beautiful’. For others they just look like squiggles. For our masterclass however we will take these squiggles and make them actually beautiful! Looking at artists such as Jasper Johns and Lance Letscher we will push the typography of equations through some exciting artistic processes, from large scale drawing, collage and painting to photographic screen printing onto a number of surfaces and substrates.
